Heathkit SP-2717A HVPS

Owned · Active deep-dive target Power supplies — vintage (HV regulated bench, higher current) Vintage Heathkit (~1970s — higher-current variant of the IP-32 family)

Overview

Heathkit SP-2717A is the higher-current sibling of the [IP-32](../Heathkit%20IP-32%20HV%20Power%20Supply/CLAUDE.md): same architecture (series-pass regulator, 0–400 V B+, AC filament, negative bias output) at substantially higher continuous current. The defining case for the SP-2717A vs the IP-32 is a full audio amplifier output stage or a transmitter PA stage — loads in the 200–400 mA range where the IP-32's regulator runs out of headroom.

Context

Together with the IP-32, this is the bench-supply pair that lets any tube circuit be breadboarded without building the supply rail first. The 'A' suffix in SP-2717A denotes a revision — the precise revision level matters for service docs (Heath issued ~3 revisions of the manual; the schematic differs at the current-limit circuit and the bleeder resistor value).

Deep dive

A multi-volume deep dive on this instrument is in planning. When the first volume lands in the source project's 02-inputs/volume_sources/, this page upgrades automatically — no website code change required.
